The History of Darts
The game of darts dates back to Medieval England. The exact purpose of darts is unknown but it is believed darts where taught as training for archery. Historians think arrows were shortened and thrown at the bottoms of empty wine barrels. This could explain the round shape of today's dart boards. At some point someone came up with a board, possibly the cross-section of a tree. These tree boards had rings that, when fully dried, would separate into grooves. Hence the rings seen on modern dart boards . The art of darts was thought to have moved to pubs by soldiers who wanted to show off their talents. Lower class people were first to embrace the game of darts. It didn't take long for the upper class to embrace it, too. King Henry VIII was known to enjoy darts and was given an ornate set by Anne Boleyn. Pilgrims brought darts to the United States. Pilgrims were said to play the game to pass the time while traveling on the Mayflower. The continued to play once they landed in America. It was around the year 1900 that darts began to resemble the game played today. The 1940s saw the standardization of dart rules and international rules came about in the 1970s. And that is the history of darts. The next time you sidle into a your local drinking establishment and put your toe up to the throwing line you can impress your friends by telling them darts was the game of pilgrims and kings.
